Finish Machining

Today, the ability to manufacture parts and tooling in the shortest possible time frame is of the utmost importance. To accomplish shortened lead times; NC programming and machining times must be shortened, processes must be consolidated, mistakes minimized and hard work must be eliminated wherever possible.
For many years Makino has been at the leading edge in the development of High Speed Machining (HSM) solutions that address these tough demands on manufacturers. There are many elements to efficient High Speed Machining including; the cutting tool, the CNC machine, the material being cut not to mention the use of a high quality CAM system.
Utilizing it’s high speed processing engine optimized to quickly calculate high tolerance toolpath, FF/cam produces toolpath that result in surface finishes in the 2-10 micron Rmax range that can reduce or eliminate bench time, even in hardened steel.
Key to effective finish machining are keeping the load on the cutter as consistent as possible, minimizing any sudden changes in cutting direction, reducing tool witness marks and producing tool motion that follows the part geometry.
In addition to powerful rough and semi-finishing toolpath strategies, FF/cam leads the way with it's unique approaches to efficient finish machining.
Minimizing Tool Witness Marks

FF/cam creates toolpath that minimizes the entry and exit into the workpiece thereby reducing the marks made by the tool as it enters a cut. Furtermore, in those cases where entry and exit moves cannot be avoided, FF/cam produces
motion that approaches the part in a manner that does not adversly effect surface quality. FF/cam even adjusts step-over values near walls to eliminate tool chatter.
FF/cam also provides "intelligent links" to clearance moves that automatically vary from cut-to-cut to eliminate any withness marks that may
otherwise occur by continuous linking in the same location.
Toolpath Matches Part Geometry
FF/cam provides and extensive set of finish machining strategies suitable to match any part geometry.
With FF/cam you can be confident that you can obtain superior surfaces finishes, regardless of the complexity of your part geometry.
FF/cam's finishing strategies include:
- Uncut Corner Areas are Machined
- While Keeping the Tool Load Constant
- Machining is Done Along a Corner
- Area Producing a Natural Continuity
- Between Adjacent Faces
- Toolpath is Automatically Generated
- in Shallow Sloped Areas Only Where Needed
- Edges are Finished to Sharply Defined Corners
- Especially Useful for Machining Parting Lines,
- Slides and Punches
- Optimal Machining Method is Automatically
- Selected to Match the Workpiece Geometry
- Automatically Generates Toolpath That Shifts
- the Tool Half a Pitch From the Previous Path
- Parallel Plane/Raster Machining
- Constant Z Machining
- 3D Offset Strategies
- Much, Much, More...
Thin Rib Machining
FF/cam's Thin Rib Machining Strategy is the perfect strategy for machining elctrodes and thin ribs.
With this strategy, toolpath is automatically generated that take into account the tool load;
providing defelection-free rib machining.
Removal of uncut areas and the stock allowance are defined seperately for each depth of cut resulting in
machining without any rib deflection due to the tool load.
